2021 Canyon Aeroad: All-new flagship race bike unleashed

It’s one of the most anticipated bike launches in the industry, and after years of development, rumour and speculation it’s finally here. Today, the 2021 Canyon Aeroad is revealed with an all-new approach to bring the iconic aero race bike bang up to date.

Whether an updated version of the German brand’s flagship aero bike was actually coming or not has been Canyon’s elephant in the room for some time now. The previous generation model is six years old and was due an update, but as the recently announced 2021 Ultimate offers nothing new to the existing platform over and above different paint jobs and specs, the question was whether we’d see the same with the Aeroad.

We were teased at this year’s Tour de France, with Alejandro Valverde and Warren Barguil competing on what appeared to be a new iteration of the frame. Eagle-eyed TV viewers of the race even noticed a new-looking Aeroad in the Zwift TV commercials. But now it’s official: this is a brand new, completely updated machine – Canyon’s fastest bike just got faster.

So what’s new? Fully integrated cabling, a revolutionary new cockpit and an overhauled frame for a start.

All this leads to a bike that is even more aerodynamic than before. Whilst visually the Aeroad retains its familiar aggressive look, clever design tweaks and hours spent in the wind tunnel have led to the bike being, according to Canyon, up 7.4 watts faster than its predecessor. It’s lighter too, tipping the scales at up to 170g less, and also 14% stiffer, making every pedalstroke even more efficient than the old model.

One of the biggest talking points of this bike is going to be the all-new ‘CP0018 Aerocockpit’ which brings a level of adjustability to an all-in one carbon stem / bar system not seen before. This offers 15mm of height adjustment without the need to alter the steerer tube length, enabling easy raising or lowering of the bars.

The bar width is also fully adjustable, with 20mm movement either way, enabling riders to tailor the width to their needs. This has a dual benefit, as along with the bike fit advantages, the cockpit ends also fold down, enabling the Aeroad to be packed into a travel box without the need to remove the bar completely – a huge win for those who travel with their bikes. We’re big fans of the approach, but can’t help but think it was a missed opportunity not to dial in some adjustability to the stem length as well.

Canyon have done some interesting things with the sizing this time around. Whilst all sizes share the same geometry, with 5mm shorter chainstays than before, the XXS and XXXS bikes in the SL range run on smaller, 650b wheels to maintain the handling dynamics for smaller riders. Additionally, along with an all-new aero-optimized seatpost, all bikes now run with 25mm front tyres and 28mm rear – a trend we are seeing more and more.

The bike is available in SL, SLX and CFR guises and, as is the way with top level new bikes these days, is disc only. As always from Canyon, you can expect the usual high quality finishing kit with components from Reynolds, DT Swiss, Fizik and Campagnolo all making appearances across the range. Drivetrains are taken care of by Shimano and SRAM, with a spec to suit every budget right up to Di2 and eTap respectively.

So all in all, the 2021 Canyon Aeroad takes the already winning formula of its much-loved predecessor and brings it right up to date. The formidable mix of aggressive geometry, aerodynamic efficiency and light weight make this once again an uncompromising, highly focused speed machine designed for the very fastest rides. Whether you’re a club rider who wants performance or Matthieu van de Poel – our view is that when it comes to aero bikes, they don’t get much better than this.

The Canyon Aeroad is available from today, and prices start from £3,399 for the CF SL 8 right up to the flagship CFR 9 EPS at £9,299.
